2 · Your Practice

• Visual artists What is your medium or discipline? Be specific (e.g., oil painting, ceramics, printmaking, mixed media).
• Writers What form or genre do you write in? Be specific (e.g., literary fiction, poetry, narrative nonfiction, essay).
• Your path as an artist / writer. How did you come to your art, and what keeps you at it? Tell us about your path - your ties to this place, the people or experiences that shaped your work, and any training, exhibitions, or shows (for writers: publications or readings) along the way. A formal résumé is not required. (Up to 400 words.)
• Tell us about your practice. How long have you been working in this discipline (writers: writing seriously), and how would you describe the work you make? (Up to 300 words.)
• Working method. How do you typically structure your working time? How do you intend to use a concentrated, four-week block of dedicated studio (writers: writing) time? (Up to 250 words.)
• CV or artist statement (optional) — PDF or Word upload.

3 · The Project

• Project title or working title
• Describe your project in detail. What do you intend to make (writers: write) during your four weeks? Describe the concept, the motivation behind it, and your vision for the finished work. (Up to 600 words.)
• What has held this project back? Tell us why this project has not yet happened. What has stood in your way - time, space, resources, equipment (writers: time, interruptions, the demands of work and family), something else? (Up to 300 words.)
• Visual artists Why this space? How will four weeks in our studio specifically make this project possible? Think about what the studio offers and tell us which of those your project actually needs. (500 square feet of open floor, access from early morning to late evening, the ability to leave work in progress out, etc) (Up to 300 words.)
• Your goal for the four weeks. In your own terms, and scaled to your medium and the scope of your project, what do you intend to accomplish or complete by the end of the residency? What would a successful four weeks look like? Please note, final scope and milestones will be confirmed with you if you are selected. (Up to 300 words.)

4 · Work Samples

Your materials are reviewed only by The Blackbird Residency and the selection panel. We will not share or publish any of your work without asking you first. Materials from applications that are not selected are deleted after the cycle closes.

• Visual artists Submit 6 to 8 images of your work (JPEG/PNG, up to 10 MB each). For each image: title, year, medium, and dimensions.
• Visual artists Or paste a portfolio link (optional).
• Writers Submit a writing sample of up to 2,500 words (roughly 10 pages; PDF or Word). May be an excerpt of a longer work, or a published book chapter or article.
• Writers Framing. If your sample is an excerpt, please provide a sentence or two so we understand its context.
• Describe one piece in depth. Choose one work and walk us through it: the idea behind it, what motivated it, your process, and what you would change if you returned to it. (Up to 400 words.)

5 · Materials & Equipment Visual artists / Materials & Workspace Writers

• Itemized materials and equipment list (writers: What do you need to write?). Note which items you already own and will bring, and which you would need to acquire.
• Stipend allocation. The residency provides a $250 materials stipend. Describe how you would apply it. (An itemized estimate is ideal.)
• Visual artists Larger or shared-use items. Any tools or equipment your project requires that exceed the stipend?
• Space and setup needs (writers: Workspace and setup needs).

6 · References

Two references who can speak to your seriousness as an artist and your working discipline: name, relationship, email, phone. We may contact them, most often at the final stage of review.

7 · Community Participation

• The Open Studio. Every inAIR resident hosts an Open Studio, where a small invited group is welcomed into your working process. What would you want people to see or understand about how you work, and is there anything about opening your process that gives you pause? (Up to 200 words.)

8 · Scheduling Preferences

Select a first and second choice from: Mid-January, Early February, Mid-February, Early March, Mid-March, Early April, Early July, Mid-July, Early August (all 2027). Each option is the start of a four-week residency. Plus scheduling notes.

9 · Acknowledgment
